RULES
Ranch sorting is a competition. It is not about the horse, the cows or the facility. It is about the relationships we develop with others in our horse family, the time we spend with them and the fun we have within the competition.
Object: The object is to sort the most cattle in numerical order from one pen to another in the shortest amount of time.
Pen size
50’ to 60’ in diameter with no 90 degree corners
Gate opening
12’
Starting: The two riders can proceed to the cattle when the judge announces,
“Cattle are ready”. Time starts when one rider crosses the gate opening, and the judge will call a random number between 0-9. That is the starting number to be sorted, all others then in consecutive order. Blank cattle will be used.
The cow is sorted when the entire cow is across the gate opening.
A lap timer is used to record the time each cow is through the opening.
Spotting of cattle will be allowed.
Judges decisions are final.
Fouls: Acts that result in a no time:
If any part of the good cow crosses the gate opening and comes back.
If any part of the wrong numbered cow crosses the gate opening.
If any part of the trash cow crosses the gate opening before the last good cow
has completely crossed the gate opening.

Mechanical error
